Richard was born in 1961 in Hitchin Hertfordshire, England, and moved to Los Angeles at 10 months of age. He graduated from SciARCH (Southern California Institute of Architecture) and currently is a structural engineer. After architecture school Richard began painting to have another skill for when architecture got slow. He always loved looking at cars. So, they were the natural choice as subjects to hone his skill. For a while Richard’s office was next to Hill & Vaughn, a car restoration company, which restored a large variety of fantastic vintage cars. He photographed and painted many of these cars. Now, he regularly attends Pebble Beach Concours D’elegance, and photographs as many as 1500 pictures in a weekend. These cars are now the subjects of his paintings. Richard didn’t realize until he started painting that it was reflections in the cars, not just the car itself, that was the beautiful part. The more he painted the more he saw in the reflections and the greater the challenges he created for himself in capturing these reflections. Richard spends over 200 hundred hours on a single painting. He is meticulous about getting all the reflections just right. He has created his own watercolor painting technique which combines wet and dry painting. This technique requires many hours of drying between layers of color. Richard spends over 20 hours mixing the colors to get the shades he wants. It takes a lot of time and patience but he feels the results justify the effort. Due to his slow speed on the paintings he does not make more than 4 new pieces a year. He hopes you enjoy looking at his paintings as much as he did creating them. In April 2005 he was accepted into the Guild of Motoring Artists.
